Moving is exciting, but let's be honest, it can feel like a hundred little things all happening at once. I've helped a lot of families through this season, and I've moved a time or two myself (with two teenage daughters and three dogs, so trust me, I get it). The secret is breaking it down into small, doable steps. Here's a simple week-by-week plan for the last month before your move.
Week 4: Make a plan
Start by picking your moving date and deciding how you'll move. Will you hire movers, rent a truck, or round up friends with pickups and promise them pizza? If you're hiring help, book it as early as you can. Grab boxes, tape, and markers, and start packing the rooms you use least, like the guest room, the attic, or that closet we all have. This is also a great time to declutter. Every item you donate or sell is one less thing to pack.
Go ahead and set up your change of address with USPS so your mail follows you, and start a list of everyone else who needs your new address.
Week 3: Take care of the details
Call your utility providers to schedule shut-off at your old home and start-up at your new one: electric, water, gas, internet, and trash. If you have kids, check in with their new schools about enrollment and records. Ask your doctors, dentist, and vet for copies of records or referrals if you're moving out of the area. Keep packing room by room, and label every box with the room it's headed to. Future you will be so grateful.
Week 2: Update and use up
Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance, and any subscriptions. Start using up what's in your pantry and freezer so there's less to move. Refill any prescriptions. Confirm the details with your movers, and make a plan for little ones and pets on moving day. A calm spot with a trusted friend can make the day easier for everyone, including the dogs.
Moving week: The home stretch
Pack a first-night essentials box. Think sheets, towels, toiletries, phone chargers, snacks, medications, pet food, a few dishes, and maybe a favorite mug. Keep important documents with you rather than on the truck. Clean out the fridge, finish packing, and confirm your utility and internet dates one more time.
Moving day
Walk through every room, closet, and cabinet one last time. Snap a few photos, lock up, and hand off the keys. Then take a deep breath. You did it! When you get to your new place, make up the beds first. After a long day, there's nothing better than a cozy place to land.
After the move
Once you're settled, update your driver's license, vehicle registration, and voter registration with your new address. Requirements can vary, so check with each office for current details. Then go meet your neighbors and find your new favorite local spots.

I put together a printable version you can stick on the fridge and check off as you go. Grab my printable moving checklist. And if you need help finding a mover or anyone else you can trust, just ask. Connecting people is my favorite part of this job.
